Online Daters Less Hasty to Jump Into Bed
The dating site OKCupid has revealed a new report that states it’s users are a lot less likely to have sex on their first date than ten years. This seems to fly in the face of the so-called "hookup culture" that a lot of online dating apps are touting. The study also, surprisingly, reveals that this has happened despite singles’ sexual beliefs becoming more liberal.
OKCupid Study Reveals the Numbers
OKCupid crunched the numbers in their report “A Digital Decade: Sex”. Answers from around a million users 2015 were compared to responses to their answers in 2005. There was one particular question, of course, “Would you consider sleeping with someone on the first date?”. The results, to say the least, were surprising. Over a decade ago, 31% of users stated that they wouldn’t. 69% said yes. In 2015, the split was fifty-fifty. This basically means that singles on OKCupid are 19% less likely to have sex on the first date.
The report also states that casual dating and sex permeates the media. This makes it seem like it is more normal than it is. Smartphones also provide an ‘always on’ option when it comes to finding sex. In spite of this, people are even less likely to jump into bed with someone they’ve just met.
As whole, this doesn’t mean that people have, overall, become a lot more reserved. The real question seems to be whether OKCupid has simply experienced a change in their user demographics. Perhaps hookup-seekers went to apps like Tinder.
Some people have viewed this as a rise in sexual conservative. But the study only speaks about actions and not necessarily about all attitude. 2005 saw that 70% of singles thought it was possible for someone to have too many sexual partners. Ten years later, however, this number was down to 52%. That represents an 18% drop. The biggest holdouts, however, remain to be straight woman with 80% thinking, in 2005 at least, there was such a thing as sleeping around too much. Nowadays, this number is at 63%.
